Dr Carolyn Barshall

Dr Carolyn Barshall has been a practicing GP in central London for thirty years and has worked predominantly in the private sector for the last fourteen. She retains her registration with the NHS and is enlisted to support the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr Barshall was born in Australia and trained at the University of Adelaide, commencing her General Practice training program there and moving to London in 1989 to study Anaesthetics for a year with the plan of moving back to Australia to become a rurally based GP.

London was instead to become her home and she achieved several postgraduate qualifications in the UK: Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners; Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology; College of Anaesthetists part 1 exam; and a Diploma in Homeopathy.

As a family GP and mother of two daughters, Dr Barshall draws on her extensive experience and knowledge in her medical practice at Chelsea General Practice. She enjoys all aspects of Family Practice and takes a special interest in adolescent wellbeing, health screening for men & women, and in managing the menopause with 'body identical hormones' - a more modern approach to HRT. Dr Barshall also takes a keen interest in assessing and supporting those with mental health issues including anxiety and depression; she holds an excellent network of Specialists and therapists for referral when appropriate.

An active member of the IDF (Independent Doctors Federation), Dr Barshall enjoys attending regular postgraduate meetings and keeps her knowledge and skills very up to date. She is also a member of a Balint Group for private GP’s, who look at the psychological features of general practice; the Young Doctors Group of private GP’s, who meet monthly and share ideas on clinical and practical aspects of practice; a Supervision Group with other GP’s, psychotherapists, psychiatrists and psychologists who meet quarterly; The Sloane Society; and The Chelsea Clinical Society. Dr Barshall is also ranked as a Top Recommended GP in the Spear’s 500 directory, she is an ambassador for The Lady Garden Foundation, a supporter of Impact 100 London, and a silver circle supporter for the Royal Court Theatre.

Dr Barshall refers to consultants from all the leading independent Hospitals in England. She has also established strong international links, with an extensive network of contacts in other major cities around the world so that she can facilitate care for patients who travel and work overseas.
